My Relationship with the Crucifix Has Changed By Gina Palladino, January 1, 2012

My relationship with the crucifix has changed. On the evening of Friday, December 30th, I sat in the balcony of the chapel at Loyola on the Potomac and a new image unfolded as I looked at Christ on the Cross. The wood of the cross started to curve upwards, fill in with wooden slats and become a boat. Jesus stood up inside the boat and became the mast, keeping his arms stretched out to support the sail cloths. The wind was at his back. I could now climb into in the boat with him and go for a sail. “Now, we’re getting somewhere,” I thought. This was exciting. The large, stationary image of Christ “stuck up there” on his cross is prevalent in many Catholic Churches, but I’m starting to realize that I can invite Jesus down and we can travel together, using his cross as a vehicle. And, perhaps he’s only “stuck up there” if I think he is and I’m only “stuck down here” if I think I am. Incidentally, I’ve also wondered if we could use the cross as a snow board or a hang glider (replacing the heavy wood with lighter materials) and I think Jesus would give us the go ahead!

What is a day of recollection?

These one-day retreats extend from 9:00 a.m. and conclude at 3:00 p.m. The day
includes: Motivations to personal prayer given by one of the retreat staff with
ample time for personal prayer reflection and ends with the celebration of the
Eucharist. The Sacrament of Reconciliation is also available. Coffee and Danish

ROAD TO LOYOLA

Dear Friends of Loyola,

The above pictures are of the road damage to the only access to Loyola on the Potomac Retreat House. The access is gone due to the flooding we incured last week.

Needless to say I am writing this appeal because this is an emergency for Loyola. We cannot have retreats and have had to cancel all retreats scheduled for September. We are desperately in need of your financial help to get us through this crisis. Our insurance agent has informed us that this damage is not covered under our property insurance.

I have already laid off most of our employees and we will work ferociously to get them back in business. Our Jesuits are displaced as well since we cannot even get emergency vehicles into the retreat house.

We are urgently working on repairing the retreat house road. If you are currrently registered for an upcoming retreat please call the retreat house for status. We will be open as soon as possible. Keep us in your prayers.
